Today’s Featured Couple is Alick and Rinel!
Every couple has valuable treasure hidden in their relationship. The Spouse Dates Featured Couple Interview is designed to “mine” some of that treasure in order to share it with you.
As you read Rinel’s story I hope you find a gem, jewel or golden nugget that will encourage and inspire you in our own marriage!
Rinel tell us a little about yourselves.
We have been married for 8 wonderful years, and live in Potchefstroom, South Africa. They have 3 kids. The eldest boy is from Rinel’s first marriage and he is 9 and a half, the second, also a boy is turning 7 soon and the youngest, a girl is 4 and a half.
How did you first meet?
Our parents have been friends for more than 40 years, so we’ve always known each other, but we only started seeing more in each other than friends after my divorce.
How long did you date before you got engaged and married?
Alick told me on Dec 22 he wanted to be more than just friends, on Jan 16 we got engaged and Apr 12 we got married.
As a couple, what is something you have struggled with or a difficulty you have overcome? How would you encourage other couples that may be facing the same challenge?
One of our top priorities has always been enough family time. When Alick got a job that took so much of his time that he hardly ever saw the kids awake, I tried to convince myself that we will all get used to it and that just the way life is. But it was really a difficult time for me and the kids. He saw that and after only 6 months he resigned, being without a job for almost 6 months after that and financially it was difficult as I am a stay at home mom too. But we as a family grew so much closer and learned so much in that time, also to learn to trust God for everything.
What was your best date ever and what made it so outstanding?
Our engagement. Alick surprised me, with the help of my mother, and based the evening on the movie One Night with the King.
What are some marriage resources that have helped you build a better marriage?
The Generous Wife and The Generous Husband mailing lists, friends, family and the books For Men Only and For Women Only.
Tell us about an “Aha!” moment that has helped you become a better spouse.
Never really had an aha moment, it happens every day.
If you could go back in time and give your newlywed selves one piece of marriage advice, what would that be?
Live simpler.
When you think about your future together, what are you most excited about?
About every moment of everyday, because it is such a huge blessing sharing life.
